We believe that making green choices doesn’t have to be overwhelming, so we recommend choosing 1-2 tips from the list below, starting small, and growing from there. Growing…get it? Alright, enough of that.

Let’s get into the list, and if you have any tips for a greener garden, we want to hear about it! Check out our Facebook page to leave us your top gardening tips!

  1. Make Your Own Compost.

It might sound difficult, but believe us, it’s completely doable.  Natural compost enriches the soil and will make your plants happy.

Save those vegetable scraps, egg shells, and more to add a nutrient boost to your soil.  For more information on how to start your own kitchen compost, click here.

  1. Don’t Stop With Flowers, Grow Your Own Groceries.

Not only does this cut down on your weekly trip to the grocery store, but growing your own fruits and veggies is a fun and healthy option.  We recommend vegetables like lettuce, spinach, carrots, potatoes, and brussels sprouts.

Fruits are a little bit more limited here in the Rocky Mountains; however, apples, pears, peaches, and plums hold their own at higher altitudes, so don’t be afraid to go for it!

  1. Try an Urban Garden.

Live downtown and don’t have the space for a garden?  Join a community garden and still have the opportunity to watch your plants prosper and make friends.  Most community gardens also offer community composting services too!  Find a community garden near you!

  1. Water Intentionally.

We all know most plants like a fair amount of water however, with Colorado’s dry climate and hot summers it’s good to develop positive watering practices so you aren’t wasting a valuable resource.

Adding mulch and compost to your soil will help reduce water evaporation.  Most importantly, make sure you are watering early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid excess evaporation which tends to happen as the sun heats up throughout the day.

  1. Save the Bees!

You probably already know that bees are facing an epidemic right now and anything we can do to protect them and create bee sanctuaries is a very good thing.  Plant a variety of diverse flowers and go pesticide-free to attract these little guys to your garden.

In fact, even if you’re not trying to attract bees, you should still consider going pesticide-free to ensure you aren’t introducing toxic chemicals into the environment.

Remember, a little goes a long way, and making one or two of these simple changes can really make a difference as far as your environmental impact goes.

Choosing to utilize green products and practices may not seem like a big deal or a lot of effort and it doesn’t need to be for you to make a positive impact within your community.
