Best House Painting Trends For 2020

Spring is just around the corner and if you’ve noticed your home could use a little TLC, you’re not alone.  Spring cleaning tends to focus on the interior of your home but you can’t be forgetting the exterior. Checking the exterior of your home and staying on top of regular maintenance will help protect your home’s value and keep the neighbors off your back.  Painting your home is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to keep your home looking fresh and protected. We’ve compiled a list of this year’s top painting trends so keep reading to learn more!

Painted Brick

Painted brick is a trend that started cropping up in early 2019 and it’s still going strong.  Painting your brick is a super easy way to update your home and give it a bit more of a modern look on a budget.  Well, what about the maintenance? Painted brick is obviously a bit more maintenance than unpainted brick but have no fear.  When you use the right product, like Loxon from Sherwin Williams, you shouldn’t have to worry about your brick for the next decade or so.  Just make sure your painter is using a product made for masonry and you’ll be in good shape. So what’s the most popular paint color for brick?  You can use any color for brick however, the most common color we see is a warm white. Check out some of our favorites below.

Some of our favorite warm whites are Greek Villa SW 7551 and Shoji White SW 7042. For a more true white try Pure White SW 7005

Dark Exteriors

This trend is not for the faint of heart.  A dark exterior body color with crisp white trim is a bold statement to make with your home, sure to stand out.  We’ll definitely be seeing houses go to the dark side this year but a word of caution. If you live in a sunny state, much like our state of Colorado, this probably isn’t going to be the best trend for you.

Dark colors tend to fade quickly so you’ll want to focus on using a high end paint product that promises long lasting color in order to try this trend. We recommend Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin Williams Emerald.

Another thing to keep in mind; make sure you check with your HOA before getting too invested in this look. Most HOAs will probably not allow such intense colors, as it would throw off the cohesive look of a neighborhood.

Some colors to consider are Thunderous SW 6201, Wall Street SW 7665, Mineral Gray SW 2740

White Bodies with Black Trim

If you’re not vibing with the ultra-dark trend, maybe this one’s a bit more your speed.  We are seeing so many houses go for a crisp white body and black trim combo. This look feels classic and cool without being too trendy.  This is definitely a great look on a home that has plenty of trim and shutters because it really defines those features. This is also a great way to make an accent door the focal point of your home, as it draws the eye to any pop of color.

Our favorite combination is Alabaster SW 7008 and Tricorn Black SW 6258

Gray is On the Way Out

You heard it here first, folks!  Gray has been the hot color for the past few years and unfortunately, it’s on its way out as we see new house painting trends for 2020 coming into focus.  From interiors to exteriors, gray has been used so much that it makes sense people are getting a bit sick of it.  If you love the gray trend we recommend spicing it up with a warm gray or taupe.

Some paint colors we love are Amazing Gray SW 7044, Alpaca SW 7022, Moth Wing SW 9174

Natural Wood Elements

We’re seeing a huge trend towards bringing natural wood elements to the exterior of your home. Things like pergolas, decks, and even wrapping your front porch posts will be a hot trend for 2020.

Using natural wood brings a warmth and dimension to your home that just can’t be achieved with paint alone. This means, rather than painting, you’ll actually be looking to stain these features in order to preserve the look of the wood.

There are several options for stains available, so be sure to ask your painter what might work best; transparent, semi-transparent, or solid. Solid stains do act more like paint, but it’s a great option for older, worn-down wood elements.  If you’re using brand new wood, that’s when a transparent or semi-transparent would be recommended.
