A big concern for most homeowners when tackling a home improvement project is how long their project will take. Whether it’s a DIY project or you hire a professional contractor, chances are you’d like to know the time investment you’ll need to make. And this is no different when it comes to painting! At Kind Home Solutions we often tell our clients that you can expect your average exterior paint project to take roughly three days to complete.
However, there are many factors that contribute to how long it takes to paint an exterior. Let’s break down the different factors you need to consider when painting an exterior.
The first and most important factor to consider is the size of your home. This is a no-brainer. If you happen to have a particularly large home it will obviously take longer to paint. Let’s assume that an average sized home is a three to four bedroom, one to two story home. Anything larger than that can expect an extra day or two added to your project timeframe. A larger home will simply need more prep to complete the project.
The type of home can also play a big factor into the time it takes to paint. For instance, a crown victorian home has far more details and accents than a ranch-style house. Victorian homes are also multiple stories tall. All of those extra details and difficult to reach places will once again equate to more prep and time added to the project.
The size of the crew working on your job is the next most important factor. A typical paint crew consists of 3-4 people. This is the size of crews we usually work with at Kind Home Solutions; however, we have had crews that consisted of 15 people. Now, that’s a lot of painters! With that many painters you can cover a lot of ground quickly, but expect your crew to be more in the 3-4 person range.
Quality over quantity. The old adage rings true for paint crews. You could have a 15 person crew, but if they are novice painters or craftsmen your project could take just as long to finish as a crew of seasoned painters. At Kind Home Solutions we only work with vetted and seasoned, professional paint crews. For all of our projects we also have a Project Manager there every step of the way to make sure that the painters are adhering to our standards and processes.
At the end of the day, the goal for your contractor should be to give you a great experience and a final product you’re happy with, not to simply get your project done as quickly as possible.
Let’s not forget about the various extra steps that your exterior paint project may need. Woodwork, gutter replacement and pressure-washing are just a few of the extra steps that may need to be completed before your paint project can even begin.
These extra steps are crucial to achieving a paint job that not only looks pristine, but that will last as well. If you don’t replace leaky gutters they can lead to water getting in the wrong places, which can lead to more leaks and (or) rotted boards. If you don’t replace your rotted boards your paint job will simply fail and the boards will continue to rot. Lastly, pressure washing is an overlooked, but essential step to the painting process. Pressure washing rids your home of all the dirt and debris that has accumulated and helps the paint adhere properly to the substrate.
Typically, you will want to complete all woodwork, gutter replacement and pressure washing in the days leading up to your paint job. On the day that the painting process does begin, you can expect the first day to consist of prep. Prep is the most important step in the painting process and also the most time-consuming. If you fail to properly prep a home, things can go south fast! So, expect the prep process to eat up most of your project timeline. Once prep is finished though, painting is a breeze.
Once your paint job is complete all that’s left is clean-up and a final walk through! At Kind Home Solutions we always have our Project Managers do a final walk through with the homeowner to ensure that everything is satisfactory. All in all, you should expect your paint job to take around three days, but be mindful of all these different factors that can go into an exterior paint job. We recommend always asking your potential contractor about their process and what you can expect from them and the crews they work with.
