Painting processes can vary quite a bit but one question that we get from nearly all of our clients is, what does your process to paint my house actually look like? We know how important understanding each step is to you; we’re talking about working on YOUR home after all! So, we’ve broken everything down for you, step-by-step, so you can know exactly what to expect when you work with our team. Our process can be organized in three major groups; Pre-Production, Production, and Production Wrap up. What do YOU Need to do to Get Your Home Paint Ready?
Your time is valuable, that’s probably one of the reasons why you’ve hired a professional painter in the first place. Our goal is to make sure you don’t feel like you need to micromanage this project. There are just a few things we’ll need from you and they all come prior to the actual painting. We’ve even put together a handy checklist so you can make sure there are no issues when your project gets started. The checklist goes over things like clearing things away from the home, trimming or tying back plants that are up against or close to the house, and turning your selected colors in. Going through that checklist prior to the start of your project just helps things run smoothly and helps ensure your project starts and finishes on time.
What do WE Need to do to Get Your Home Paint Ready?
As for us, there’s a lot that goes into each project even before paint touches your house. You want to make sure that your house painting stays on schedule so any wood or gutter replacement and pressure washes need to happen prior to your start date.
Wood replacement
A great number of our clients have at least some wood to be replaced. This can be especially true if you’re in an older home or the home hasn’t been maintained frequently over the years. Painting over failing, rotten wood will not leave you with a lasting paint job so we do take care of wood replacement prior to painting. Most wood replacement is scheduled for the week before your project is scheduled to begin however, dates can vary. Wood replacement dates are confirmed with your Account Manager, the team member who schedules your job, prior to the wood actually being replaced. You are not required to be home during this step. Our woodworking teams are well trained and familiar with our process so they will go directly off the work order and use photos taken at the estimate for reference.
Gutter Replacement
Similar to our woodwork schedule, gutter replacement is typically scheduled to take place the week before your scheduled start date. Again, these dates can vary but your Account Manager will confirm when the crew will be out. We do write up a detailed gutter replacement work order at the estimate so you are not required to be available during this step of the process.
Pressure Wash Home
The pressure wash is a light rinse to rid your home of any dust, debris, and cobwebs and just get your siding and trim clean and ready for paint. You are not required to be available during the wash however, we do want to make sure that we have access to the backyard, access to a spigot, and that all windows are closed. Most pressure washes take 30 minutes to an hour to complete depending on the size of your home. It is important to note that if your home has tested positive for lead then we will NOT be doing a pressure wash. Instead, the crew will hand wipe the house the morning your project starts.
Each home is unique and your home may require all or none of these steps of our process for painting your house. Expectations will be set at the estimate and when scheduling production however, if you have any questions at any point please contact your Account Manager.
Introduction Call from Your Project Supervisor
At this point, your painting is just around the corner and there’s just one more step that may be needed to get your home paint ready. The week before your project, you’ll receive a phone call from your Project Manager. We have a Project Manager assigned to every single project and their job is to communicate with you, manage the paint crew, and ensure project deadlines are met.
Your Initial Walk Through
We know your time is valuable so we do schedule a specific day and time to begin your exterior painting project. Each project begins with an initial walk through. This is an opportunity for you to meet your Project Manager as well as the crew, to review colors, and confirm the scope of work prior to the work beginning. Most walk-throughs take only 15-20 minutes and once the walk through is complete our team will get started with prep and protection and you are free to come and go as you please.
Paint Prep and Protection
This step in the home painting process is critical for two reasons; great prep means you will have a great finished product that will last and protecting your home and the surfaces we aren’t painting is a top priority. For most clients, your home is your biggest investment and we know that. You’re paying for a professional paint job so making sure the prep and protection are top priorities will help your project go smoothly. Painting – Finally!
We’re finally here and your home is ready to be painted. Although the scope of work does differ from home to home most projects begin with painting the body, then the trim and accents. If we are staining your deck, we typically leave that for last as we would need to walk on it during the painting. A lot of clients ask whether we’ll need access to the interior of the home during the exterior painting process. We do not need access to the inside of your home however, if we are painting your front door then we will need to coordinate a time to have that door open and allow time for that to dry. Most exterior repaints take 1-3 days to complete and we should be able to give you an idea of how long your project will take during the estimate.
Final Walk Through
Just as every project begins with an initial walk through, we also wrap up each project with a final walk-through. This will be scheduled by your project supervisor and we will need you available for this meeting. At the final walk through there will be a thorough inspection of the work and we’ll be looking for any touch ups that might be needed or spots that could have been missed.
Touch Ups
If there are any touch ups spotted during the final walk-through, the crew should be able to get those touched up right there on the spot. Please note, if you don’t catch something at the final walk through you can always call that in at a later time and we’ll be happy to address it.
Collect Payment
You don’t want to pay a deposit so we don’t ask for a deposit. Payment is collected at the final walk through once you’ve had an opportunity to inspect the work and you are 100% happy. Our supervisors can take credit card, check, or even cash payments right there on the spot. Once your project is paid in full, your warranty is activated and your paint project is protected!
Every project is unique in some way so not every process to paint your home is the same. There could be something mentioned here that doesn’t apply to your project however, we hope this gives you a better understanding of what to expect.
